Ban Chiang Archaeological Site

Ban Chiang is an archaeological site in Udon Thani province, in North East Thailand, where have been found remains of human settlements dating back to Prehistoric Age. In Ban Chiang there are ruins of burial sites and remains of a village, inhabited in a period between 2100 B.C. and 300 AD, with evidence of transition between Neolithic Age, when man was not yet capable of working metals, to Bronze Age and finally to Iron Age. Ban Chiang is considered one of the most important prehistoric archaeological sites in all South East Asia, one of earliest evidence of Bronze Age culture in the world. Given the importance of the finds and dating of them, also confirmed by radiocarbon dating, on 1992 Ban Chiang it was appointed World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The remains that have been found in Ban Chiang show that the first inhabitants of the site were settlers, rice farmers. Among the thousands of artefacts found ancient settlement there are human skeletons, ax heads, rolls of clay and ceramics. Artefacts found in tombs, dating more recently, are showing signs of improvement in the technical production of ceramics, with better skills decorative. In these tombs we were also found metal objects in bronze and iron, as anklets, rings and bracelets, wires and rods, spearheads, hooks, blades, and little bells, demonstrating the transition from the Neolithic period to the period when the first inhabitants of the area began to work metals. Visitors to Ban Chiang can admire a part of the excavations of archaeologists in one of the areas still open. The artefacts found instead, mostly ceramics, are on display at the museum adjacent to the site.
