Koh Khai

Koh Khai is a small paradisiacal island just halfway between Koh Tarutao and Koh Lipe, approximately 15 kilometres away from Pak Bara Pier in Satun province, and it is in turn under the tutelage of Tarutao Marine National Park. Its Thai name, which literally means ‘Egg island’, is derived according to some from its white sandy beach with an egg-like colour, another theory is that turtles lay their eggs here. A third reason may also be due to the fact that it is oval shaped like an egg. Koh Khai is of a breathtakingly beauty and really lives up to the name "Paradise Island", the other name with which it is also known. The main highlight of Koh Khai is the giant archway stone with a human-size hole through which you can go. The impressive rock archway is one of the must-see places in the whole archipelago and it most famous landmark. It is present in every photo gallery dedicated to the Tarutao Marine Park and it is often erroneously considered an attraction of Koh Lipe. Known as the Arch of Love, it is believed that any couple who goes through the stone archway will get married soon. On the Valentine’s Day, the marriage certificate registration ceremony will be held under it. Apart from the natural stone arch, there is another scenic point at the south end of the island where, climbing the rock formations, you have a wonderful view over the entire island. Koh Khai is also famous for its white sandy beach and the crystal clear waters surrounding the island teeming with marine life. The shallow coral reef is home to many species of tropical fish, a true paradise for snorkelers. The stunning island is totally unspoilt, there are not resorts or any facilities on Kho Khai, and the authorities of the National Park do not allow overnight stay on the island, not even with a tent. Tourists can only visit the island and other surrounding islands, such as the largest Koh Ta-nga, during the day with daily excursions.
Getting there - Koh Khai is located along the route of ferries that run from Pak Bara Pier to Koh Lipe and vice versa, just halfway from the first stop at Koh Tarutao and Koh Lipe. The ferries go very close allowing to all tourists the vision of the beautiful island, however Koh Khai has no piers and so the stop is not usually expected. Nevertheless you can ask to stop at the crew and get off in the waters near the beaches. Be sure of this possibility to get to island before the ferry departs, and also that a ferry pick up you before the sunset. Another economic way to visit Koh Khai is to buy a package tour for the Tarutao Marine Park from Koh Lipe or from Pak Bara Pier that includes a visit to the island. Definitely, the best way to get to Koh Khai from Koh Lipe or from the mainland is to hire a private boat tour. Certainly is not the cheapest solution considering that you have to hire an expensive speedboat, the long-tail boats due to the long way will not take you here, but so you will have more time to enjoy and visit the paradisiacal island.
