Sunday Walking Street Chiang Mai

Located within the old city walls, Sunday Walking Street Market offers one of the most exciting shopping experiences in Chiang Mai. The great thing about this market is that is has a bit of everything to satisfy the wishes of each visitor, from plenty of stalls selling souvenirs, local art and handicrafts to numerous stands that offer tasty street food and even areas set up for foot massages. The Sunday Walking Street also serves as a venue for all kinds of local events, from live music performances and dance recitals to beauty contests performed on the stages set along the main road and its small alleys. As the name suggests, it takes place every Sunday from 5.00 pm until 11.00 pm, with the first vendors opening their stands at 4.00 pm and a few stalls remaining open even until midnight. The outdoor market starts at Tha Phae Gate and running the length of Ratchadamnoen Road until Wat Phra Singh temple, about a kilometre in total, and includes also its smaller side streets and food stands branching out from the main road. The road is closed to traffic during this time and since the market is one of the city's most popular tourist attractions, it does get very busy, especially during high season. The items on offer lean more towards local handicrafts rather than the large variety of products on display at the Chiang Mai Night Bazaar. A large part of the goods come from the famous San Kamphaeng Road, also known as the Highway of crafts, although there are plenty of hill tribe vendors that offer the usual assortment of handmade clothes, trinkets, souvenirs, textiles and silver jewellery.
