Situated roughly in the center of the eastern coast, Lamai Bay is Samui's second most popular tourist destination. Featuring a smaller but more relaxing beach than the noisy Chaweng located a few kilometers north, until a few decades ago Lamai was the preferred destination for backpackers, with a few budget accommodations, in recent years there have been built several luxury resorts, numerous bars and restaurants, yet the beach has remained quiet and pleasant. In the centre of village, diagonally opposite McDonald's, you'll find the Lamai Night Plaza, one of Samui's most famous night bazaars. The outdoor market opens every day at around 4:00pm and closes after midnight and offers plenty shopping and dinning opportunities. There you'll see the usual pirated goods that you can find in the other walking street markets of island such as Ralph Lauren and Lacoste polo shirts, T-shirts, jeans, Ray Ban sunglasses, Rolex, Breitling and Cartier watches, but after a stroll up and down the lines of stalls it becomes plain that there are also local goods on sale here. At the bazaar, you can buy items in carved wood, local handicrafts, souvenirs, sarongs, Buddha images, lamps, electronics, flip flops and sandals, as well as bags, belts, beach wear, bedspreads and colourful cushions. Like in any markets on island, there is free bargaining, even though prices are already quite affordable. This night bazaar is not as noisy as Chaweng’s version and even has a food court offering a great choice of spicy Southern Thai dishes as well as international cuisine, such as Italian classics, Mexican food and Spanish-style tapas, Chinese dishes, Indian curries, British fish‘n chips, hamburgers and fried chicken. There is also a café and a pub to the side.Read More
