Fingerprinting for SIMs mandatory

All Thailand's mobile users must participate in the online fingerprint ID system for the new pra-paid and postpaid mobile SIM card registration, or they will not be allowed to use mobile service. The automatic fingerprint registration system, implemented by the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC), is set to start from Jan 1, 2018 said Secretary General Takorn Tantasith.

Fingerprinting and recording will take a maximum of 2 minutes and will be done by both who will buy new SIM cards for the first time and who already owns them and will want to keep the service active. The Secretary-General has stated that the fingerprint system is designed to create greater security and benefits for mobile phone users, in particular for mobile banking. The first digital fingerprinting machines will be installed in three southern provinces, Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat, then other 30 MILA machines will be delivered to mobile operators nationwide by the end of the year.
