Wat Phan Tao is one of the oldest temples in Chiang Mai, in fact, the temple's first structures were built probably in the late 14th century. Located within the old walled city, just next to the sacred Wat Chedi Luang, Wat Phan Tao is well known for its exquisite Lanna-style Viharn, the ordination hall, entirely made of teakwood on a stone base, one of the few remaining of this kind in Chiang Mai. The teakwood panels were originally part of a Ho Kham, a throne hall for one of the kings of Chiang Rai, likely King Mahotara Prateth, which were moved here and then re-used. Viharn is now where the sacred Phan Tao Buddha gold image is enshrined. Behind the temple there is a pond with bamboo clusters on the side, and a Buddha image sitting under a Bodhi tree. Often this area, as well as all around the Viharn, is decorated with lots of orange prayer flags, depending on whether there is incoming a holy holiday or a full moon. During these ceremonies the monks will sit beside the lake, singing and releasing the Khom Loi, floating lanterns, making magic the atmosphere.
