Wat Ratchanatdaram & Loha Prasat

Wat Ratchanatdaram is a temple located along the street leading to the Golden Mountain, where is the most famous Wat Saket, just outside the old area of Rattanakosin Island. The temple belongs to the third-class category and its name means Temple of the Royal Niece. The Wat was built by King Jessadabodindra, Rama III, in 1846 for his niece, the Princess Mom Chao Ying Sommanus Wattanavadi that later became the Queen and consort to King Rama IV. Its beautiful Viharn, the ordination hall, was built parallel to the waterway Khlong Saen Saep; it has a square surrounded by support pillars, inside it there is a beautiful copper Buddha image. Despite the Viharm is the most important edifice of temple, it is not the main attraction of  Wat Ratchanatdaram, due to the main attraction is the edifice site to the west of it, namely the Loha Prasat Monastery, also known as Metal Pagoda or Metal Castle. Loha Prasat is a 36-meter-tall multi-tiered structure featuring 37 metal spires, which represent the 37 virtues toward enlightenment in Buddhist belief. The monastery is inspired by two other similar temples found in India and Anuradhapura in Sri Lanka. Loha Prasat Monastery consists of five concentric square towers with the outer, middle and center structures crowned with cast iron spires, hence the name Metal Castle. A holy Relic of Buddha is kept at the highest level. Loha Prasat is an Indian name that refers specifically to the building with a square plan and spires of metal, and was originally used as accommodation of the monks. Of the three structures similar ever existed in the world only to Bangkok it is still standing.
Admission fee & Opening hours: Loha Prasat is open daily from 08:00 until 17:00. Admission is free.
Getting there: The temple is located between Ratchadamnoen Klang and Mahachai Roads, in the Phra Nakhon district. There aren’t SkyTrain or subway stations in the immediate vicinity, so the best way to get ther is to use a metered taxi, or in alternative to use the boats of Khlong Saen Saep, perhaps combining a visit to Wat Saket.
