Phra Nang Cave Beach

The beach at Ao Tham Phra Nang is without doubt the Krabi’s most beautiful beach and likely the finest in Thailand. Also renowned as one of the world's top ten beaches, it is hidden in the small cove on the southernmost tip of peninsula between Ao Nang and Krabi, and it is accessible only by boats. Phra Nang Cave Beach derives its name from a mythological Princess who, according to legend, had made of this beach and cave her home. The beach is a small corner of paradise long no more that 450 metres with soft fine white sand surrounded by stunning limestone cliffs and shallow crystalline turquoise waters for safe swimming. Near the shore lie some rocky outcrops and three small towering limestone islands, including the twins Koh Rang Nok and Koh Rang Nai that you can reach on foot at low tide, and offer great snorkelling options. At beach's north edge stands a vertical cliff of limestone rock that offers to the climbers one of the most stunning sites for this thrilling activity in Krabi Province. At the south edge there is a huge cave that can be visited by climbing and offers a great view across the entire beach. The huge cliffs in front of the cave are also very popular for climbing. Right next to the big cave is the smallest but most famous Princess's cave, also known as Tham Phra Nang Nok or outer cave, which lies hidden below another tall limestone cliff. This is the cave where the Thais sacrifice and pray if they wish to have children. Therefore, the small cave looks a little bit strange decorated with many wooden penises. For those who like to hike, inside the cliff is a hidden lagoon named Sa Phra Nang or Holy Princess Pool which can be reached by following a hiking trail into the side of the mountain. The climb is a bit challenging, but that's what makes it so much fun. All these natural beauty, along with the limestone cliffs that offer a natural shadow from the warm afternoon sun, make the beach an ideal place to spend a day in total relaxation. Unfortunately despite being well hidden, Phra Nang Cave Beach is more popular and busier than Railay West Beach and can be really crowded during high season. Most visitors arrive with longtail boats from Ao Nang Beach, about 100 Baht per person, so sometimes there are a lot of boats along the beach. Some of them are even vendors selling snacks and drinks. The beach's facilities are very limited, there are some massage, small restaurants selling sell street Thai food and a few bars. The only accommodation at Phra Nang is the luxury five star Rayavadee Premier Resort, which boasts an invidiable location well hidden behind the beach and the jungle, an ideal spot for a romantic getaway or wedding venue.Read More
