Kamala Beach

Situated approximately in the center of the western coast, Kamala Beach is one of the most beautiful and least visited beaches on Phuket Island. Despite its natural beauty and the ideal location, just 24 km south of the International Airport and 8 km north of the lively Patong Beach, the 2km sandy beach is little appreciated and rarely frequented by holidaymakers in Phuket. However, in the last few decades thanks to its quieter pace, Kamala is rapidly becoming one of Phuket's best spots for family holidays, retirees and other longer-term visitors who choose to stay in the numerous budget guest houses and cheap apartments within the village, or in the many new hotels and resorts scattered along the beach that offer great services at affordable prices. Kamala Beach is quite wide and surrounded by the island's quietest and shallow waters. The bay is well sheltered, so during the high season, from November to April, you will not find any waves at Kamala, making the beach ideal for kids and less experienced swimmers. The northern part of beach is a small unspoiled and undeveloped heaven. Here you will find the finest white sand and a very relaxed atmosphere. Most of central area of Kamala is occupied by many beachfront bars and restaurants that serve seafood, Thai and International dishes. This part of the beach is very quiet even during the high season, and most places will close as soon as the low season arrives. The southern end of beach is dominated by the Kamala village, which actually consists of two distinct areas, the original Muslim village set fairly far from the beach, and the touristy part built along the shore line. Approached the beachfront, just past the bridge in front of the Kamala school, you will find plenty of very attractive little bars and restaurants set along a new walkway that follows most of beach, where you can enjoy a drink or a seafood dinner while admiring beautiful sunsets. The southern end of Kamala can be quite crowded during the high season but still offers a more relaxed atmosphere compared to the chaotic Patong or Karon. The best place to swim in Kamala is that between the northern end and the middle of the beach. Towards the rocks around the northern promontory is the best place to snorkel, you can hire snorkelling equipment from suppliers along the beach. Sun loungers can be rented for about 100 baht; most of them are located from the middle to the southern end of the beach. Read More
