Khlong Lat Mayom Floating Market

Khlong Lat Mayom is one of the three floating markets close to Bangkok, no more than twenty kilometres from downtown. The market takes place along a narrow khlong, a man-made waterway, in Khet Taling Chan, one of 15 districts in the Thonburi side of capital. Unlike the most famous and crowded floating markets in Amphawa and Damnoen Saduak, the Khlong Lat Mayom is rarely visited by tourists, however, it still has the charm and authenticity of a typical Thai fresh market and you might be one of the only foreigners around. Located just few kilometres west of Taling Chan Floating Market, the market has characteristics similar to largest twin. The narrow canal does not allow the mooring to many boats, so only few boats are parked all alongside the riverbank and below a low bridge, while largest part of market takes place on the firm ground and wooden walkways along both banks. The market covers a fairly large area with narrow footpaths and the individual stalls sheltered by makeshift roofs or straw huts. One side of market is dedicated to the fresh market with vendors coming from nearby farms busy to sell their products, mostly beautiful veggies and tropical fruits as pineapples, green or ripe mangoes, grapefruits, bananas and grapefruits. The other side of market is dedicated to selling all kinds of colourful snacks, sweets, cooked food and seafood. From the wooden boats moored the sellers offer seafood and fresh fish cooked on small barbecues, like prawns, blue crabs, squid or the exquisite Hoi Tod, the Thai oyster omelette, for 20 or 30 baht per dish. Eating seafood along the canal of a floating market is a great attraction for locals, cheap and informal it's an unmissable ritual during the weekend; however, at Khlong Lat Mayom most of the food vendors and the eating areas are on land. At several stalls and small restaurants you can taste noodle soups, Pad Thai, Kanom Jeen, mango and banana with sticky rice, sea bass in salt crusted, grilled seafood, mussels and many other types of shellfish. At Khlong Lat Mayom you can even enjoy a long-tail boat ride around the nearby klongs for around 100 baht. All boats depart, as soon as they’re full, from the narrow canal near the main section of the market.
Opening time: Khlong Lat Mayom Floating Market is open on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from 9:30am to 4:30pm.
Getting to Khlong Lat Mayom: the easiest way to reach the market from downtown is approach to it with the SkyTrain until Bang Wa BTS Station, the Silom Line's last station, and then use a taxis for the last 9 km of path, fare around 150 THB.
